Clive Sullivan was born in Cardiff in 1943. During his teenage years, he had operations on his knees, feet and shoulders, but joined the Army when he left school in 1961. During his Army career, Clive played rugby as a winger and was signed to Hull FC as a professional, although his first three seasons were restricted because of his Army duties, more knee operations and a near fatal car accident in 1963. He left the Army in 1964 and eventually played 352 games for Hull FC (scoring 250 tries) and 213 games for Hull Kingston Rovers (scoring 118 tries). His international debut for Great Britain was in 1967 and in 1972, Clive became the first black captain of any British sporting team, leading Great Britain to become World Champions that year. He eventually represented Great Britain 17 times, and in 1975, captained Wales in the Rugby League World Cup, when they finished third. Clive died in October 1985 from cancer, at the age of 42.
