Professor George Gray

Professor George Gray was a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Hull, working there from 1949 to 1990. In 1973, he published a paper proving that a new class of liquid crystals (which George and his team synthesized) could be stored at room temperature, paving the way to the now universal use of liquid crystal display (LCD) in flat screen televisions, watches, calculators, smart phones and many other appliances. This now a multi-billion, international industry, but unfortunately, George never patented his technology. He does however, have a high speed Hull Train named after him! George died in 2013.
