Publications for Sale

We aim to promote interest in and celebration of the rich History and Heritage of the city of Kingston upon Hull by selling publications about people and places in the city and its rich history. We now offer for sale a variety of new books in our on-line shop. You can buy two or three books together to save on postage. Use the link to the shop here or the menu above and this will give you an idea of the kinds of books we have in stock. We are able to send goods to Hull people wherever they live in the UK or the rest of the world. All books are dispatched with Royal Mail.

We also sell second hand books in the centre and on eBay. Some of these are in pristine condition and would pass for new if you are looking for a present for someone interested in local history.

Educational Resources for Local and Family History

As a resource for both Local and Family History we have thousands of digitised old photographs of Hull and surrounding areas, over 350 box files of information about people, buildings, streets etc. of Hull, a nearly full set of Hull Daily Mail flashbacks which have been catalogued for easy access. We have two map cabinets with old maps of Hull and district along with an extensive range of local history books and free on-line access to Ancestry Library.Com.

A group of our volunteers have researched and put together books on the WW1 & WW2 casualities from this area which are accessible to read when you visit the centre. A couple of the volunteers have visited France & Belgium over 6 years and taken photos of the grave stones of all East Yorkshire casualties from this area so if you have a relative buried over there we will have a photo of their grave stone..

Protecting the Carnegie Heritage Centre.

We aim to protect and preserve the former Carnegie library as a building of architectural and historical significance, and use it to provide a resource for the provision of education in local and family history. The building was designed by local man Joseph Hirst and built in 1905 with funds provided by the great philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is designed in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement and is a Grade II listed building. The building was opened in 1905 by Sir James Reckitt who was chairman of the Libraries Committee of Hull City Council. The building ceased being a library in 2001 and the Carnegie Heritage Action Team was formed in 2006 with the aim of rescuing the building from further decline. We opened in January 2008 as Carnegie Heritage Centre.

As well as providing a home for the activities of the Carnegie Heritage Centre, we hold resources for the East Yorkshire Family History Society and the Old Kingstonians Association. We host meetings of the North Eastern Railway Association twice a year, see their web site https://ner.org.uk

We also accommodate The Bindery, a local book binding service run by David Robinson and Steve Ingram. www.haveitbound.com
